Andrew Bernish
Andrew teaches PSUS 6201, Principles of Urban Planning and both GWU SUP GIS courses (URSP 688L and URSP 688M - Desktop and Web GIS for Planners).
Mr. Bernish is a Senior Transportation Planner and GIS Analyst with KFH Group, where he has served as lead cartographer and GIS analyst for the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) since 2017. In this role, he provides GIS analyses and web application development across multiple business units within the Secretary of Transportation’s office, including Active Transportation and Micromobility, Freight and Rail, Real Estate and Economic Development, and Asset Management.
He has developed over 100 interactive web applications, maps, and data dashboards for MDOT, and maintains the Office of Planning and Capital Programming’s website using SharePoint, HTML, and JavaScript. His cartography has been recognized with a Special Achievement in GIS award by ESRI in 2019 and as a winner in the first annual ArcGIS for Adobe Creative Cloud maps competition in 2020.
Mr. Bernish holds dual certifications as an American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) and a Certified GIS Professional (GISP). He serves as webmaster and board member for the Maryland Chapter of the American Planning Association, and sits on the boards of Talbot Thrive and the MD Eastern Shore Trail Network, both of which advocate for bicycle and pedestrian access across Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He is a former U.S. Peace Corps volunteer who served in South Africa’s Education and Community Resource Program.
