The Global Leadership Development Program (GLDP), offered by CPS’ Center for Excellence in Public Leadership (CEPL), received the International Program of Excellence Award at UPCEA’s Annual Conference in March 2017. The award is given for programs “engaged in activities that promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas of global significance.”

The GLDP is the only one of its kind. It is a professional education program that combines credit and noncredit courses with experiential education, site visits, and extracurricular events to prepare mid-to upper-level executives to lead international teams and conduct business in and with America.

Toni Marsh, GLDP Faculty Director, accepted the award on behalf of GW and observed, “This is a large and complex endeavor and we simply couldn’t have enjoyed the success that we have were it not for the support of Dean Eskandarian and the rest of the team at CPS. We continue to improve the program and it grows more exciting with every iteration.”

The program’s first cohort of sixteen executives from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) spent 10 months at GW acquiring leadership and management skills from November 2015-August 2016. The program gave them the opportunity to sharpen their academic, business and social English. They took classes focusing on finance and leadership and also elective courses in their professional areas. They went on site visits to organizations in the Washington area and met with leaders of international organizations. The program culminated with a 10-week practicum at host organizations.

"The GLDP program was an innovative new initiative which would not have happened without the full support of the university. The first cohort received extraordinary feedback from both its participants and our corporate partner. The success of the first cohort has led to the second cohort and additional partners to join us here at GW. We look forward to expanding our programs to other organizations, industries and countries in the world,” said Jing Burgi-Tian, director of the GLDP, Center for Excellence in Public Leadership.
