Homeland security organizations at the local, state and federal level are tasked with upholding the rule of law, while simultaneously safeguarding individual liberty. It is imperative that actions taken by these organizations and those responsible for overseeing them be based upon factual and reliable information. It appears increasingly challenging to locate reliable information about pressing public policy and homeland security issues.
The panel, moderated by Elaine Lammert, program director for the Homeland Security master’s program, included remarks by two of our program faculty, John Occhipinti and Joshua Browne.
Our panelists discussed strategies homeland security organizations can pursue to fulfill their mission in these challenging circumstances. The discussions also revolved around "information literacy,” as well as how to be an active and responsible consumer of the news."
