Join us for the Sustainable Urban Planning's 10-year Anniversary Spring Symposium Series

Having a better understanding of the value of diversity in the planning academe and workplace is needed, as is more representation and agency of underrepresented groups to fill this gap. While planning scholars and practitioners have acknowledged the importance of diversity, the planning academe and practice have struggled to recruit and retain diverse groups and promote cultural competency in programs. There has been limited research that examines how students perceive or experience diversity within planning education and the steps necessary to address issues of bias and discrimination in planning education.

Dr. Jackson will share findings from a study conducted by the ACSP Planners of Color Interest Group. Based on 451 surveys with urban planning students and 60 in depth interviews, the study highlights the experiences students have interacting within the classroom, with faculty, with peers, and with professionals as they prepare to enter into planning practice or academe.
