The 13th GW Ethics in Publishing Conference, held October 12-13, 2023, as a hybrid conference at the GW Arlington Education Center, was the most successful yet, with more than 500 attendees and 20 presentations from 25 publishing professionals and students from Canada, Chile, India, Mexico, New Zealand and the United States.
Topics discussed at this year’s conference included AI-assisted accessibility for marginalized authors, AI taxonomy and ethics for publishing workflows, open peer review and open access, multilingualism and translation, diversity and inclusion, workplace equity, accessibility, book bans, representation, and other topics, from publishing leaders at the CDC, Marine Corps University Press, American Society for Microbiology, Macmillan Learning, Brown University Digital Publications, the University of Veracruz, and several other organizations.
Seven GW MPS in Publishing students presented their Ethics in Publishing Capstone Projects.
Five international publishing organizations sponsored the conference, including the Association of University Presses (AUPresses), Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP), the Association of American Publishers (AAP), the Council of Science Editors (CSE) and the International Society of Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE).
GW’s Graduate Program in Publishing collaborates with these partners in inviting members to submit presentation proposals and to attend the conference, the only conference dedicated exclusively to ethical issues in publishing, long a core component of GW’s MPS in Publishing Program.
This year’s conference was co-organized by Puja Telikicherla, Licensing and Subsidiary Rights Manager, American Psychiatric Association, and John W. Warren, Director and Associate Professor, Publishing, George Washington University and hosted by the College of Professional Studies and its Graduate Program in Publishing. The conference is presented in parallel with the GW Journal of Ethics in Publishing, GW Publishing’s student-managed journal, which announced its publication of Volume 2 at the conference, and invited presenters and attendees to submit papers to the journal.
