On November 12, 2013 twenty students from the Integrated Information, Science, and Technology (IIST) bachelor’s program visited Deloitte’s Center for Federal Innovation in Rosslyn, Arlington, VA. CPS Career Services partnered with the IIST program to sponsor this unique out-of-class experience.
During the visit, students observed firsthand the latest technologies and creative solutions from hybrid clouds and cyber analytics to data visualization and interactive modeling. Presenters included principals and analysts in Deloitte’s Analytics HIVE (Highly Immersive Visual Environment) program. HIVE is a physical environment that provides Deloitte’s clients the opportunity to actively engage with their data to better inform business decisions.
“Site visits such as these provide a valuable learning experience by helping students bridge classroom lessons with issues faced in the real world,” said Derek Haseltine, director of CPS Career Services.
Employees from Deloitte, including two GW alumni, presented a virtual demonstration of customized data dashboards that were prepared for Deloitte’s federal and private sector clients.
The firsthand exposure proved to be an eye-opening experience for many. IIST student James Colfert was impressed by Deloitte’s ability to capture data from social media feeds and use this information to illuminate public opinions regarding particular products and organizations. “The demonstration altered my view of social media and the significance it holds as a market indicator,” noted Colfert.
In addition to the HIVE, students toured the Deloitte’s Arlington facility and met with recruitment personnel for an inside scoop on current projects and hiring needs.
“We are extremely grateful to the Deloitte team for giving our students this unique opportunity and showcasing some of the most cutting edge technology that is being delivered into the market place. Students who attended this tour have a new appreciation for using their classroom work in finding solutions to real world problems,” noted Sara Hooshangi, the IIST program director.
